St Mary’s Loch and Loch o' the Lowes

Welcome to St Mary's Angling Club.

St Mary's Loch and the Loch o' the Lowes are situated on the A708 between Selkirk and Moffat in the Scottish Borders. The main loch St Mary's is the largest body of water in the Borders at just over 3 miles long and ranges in depth to over 150ft deep and is half a mile across at its widest point. St Marys has an area of 640 acres and the Loch o the Lowes has an area of 100 acres. The following information will help you get the most from your visit to these rugged and picturesque lochs. The lochs are around 800ft above sea level and the prevailing wind is South Westerly. The smaller of the two lochs is the Loch of the Lowes, and the two are joined by a small river (The Little Yarrow) which allows the passage of any fish that wishes to move.

We offer excellent unspoiled fishing 365 days/year on both lochs for Brown Trout, Pike and Perch at a very reasonable cost. If you enjoy peace and tranquillity in a beautiful setting then you really must come for a visit.

Click on the type of fishing you are interested in, under the current prices which are listed. Also on St Mary's 3 man boats may be hired. We also have one boat for hire on our smaller loch the Loch o the Lowes. We do not offer outboard motors but you may bring your own (up to 4HP), you are now required to wear a lifejacket (supplied when you take charge of your boat).

The Glen Cafe offers some excellent meals (and Bacon and Egg Rolls) as well as sweets and snacks. Fishing permits are now available from the cafe, contact them via our links page.

If you would like a longer stay in a Self-Catering Cottage, then look no further than the Half House, where you can get a great night’s rest for up to 4 people and wake up to some beautiful panoramic scenery. https://www.halfhousecottage.co.uk/

There are also several B&B establishments within a 10-mile radius of the lochs.

Public toilets are situated next to the Cafe and are FREE to use. The nearest shops are situated in Selkirk and Moffat both are around 16 miles away.

Bivvys may be erected for overnight fishing, but please be considerate and respect the property of others. No large fires are allowed, you may have a SMALL fire for cooking purposes on the shingle banks of the lochs. Fires on grassed areas and close to plantations are forbidden! Do NOT desecrate the trees in the area, in the interests of safety this rule will be strictly enforced!

Please note that St Mary's Loch and the Loch o the Lowes are protected waters and a permit must be obtained before fishing. All fishing is Catch and Release ONLY.

The image Below will show where you are permitted to fish around both Lochs. Please make sure you follow these guidlines when setting up. Any areas of Livestock are also OFF limits to camping overnight.

The images below will focus into the restricted areas.

The area above marked in Blue is for Members Only. All visitors may Fish this area, but must park in the Cark Park marked above.

The area marked above is Restricted Grounds to Bowerhope Farm. Please do NOT camp overnight here. Fishing is allowed from the Banks, but more accessable via Boat.

The area above is Rodono House Hotel Private Grounds and can NOT be bank fished, there is also no Camping allowed here.

The two areas maked above are Tibbie Shiels and St Mary's Loch Sailing Club. Both areas are out of bounds when it comes to Bank Fishing. Boat anglers can NOT moor a boat anywhere around these areas. The area around Tibbie Shiels includes the banking of the river up to the Bridge that runs across. Please stick to the Yellow marked area when fishing here.
